Laptop problems

It would appear that the fan on my old laptop has either failed or is failing, which means it overheats easily, and therefore isn't saleable. Does anyone have any idea how to go about fixing this? Sony probably want me to pay a fortune for a new part, even if I could work out what to do with it. Sending it for repair is probably more money than I want to send.
